Template letter for Guided Green Belt Training

If you are interested in our Guided Green or Black Belt training and certification program, you can use this template as a guide for sending an email to your manager or supervisor to request funding or approval to attend. Feel free to edit with your own wording and company initiatives.

Dear [Manager’s Name],

I would like to request approval to attend a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training and certification program.

The blanded training is held virtually, which is a mix of self-paced online courses and weekly live check-ins with a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt coach with over 25 years of experience. The coaching sessions ensure that we complete the online training and are able to connect the training concepts and principles to our processes and industry.

To achieve the Green Belt certification, we are required to complete the online training, attend the coaching sessions, and complete an actual improvement project that saves at least $10,000 for our [company/organization]. This ensures that the improvement pays for the cost of the training.

In addition, we can have 2 other people attend the sessions for free if we all work on the same project. I was thinking we could invite [Person #1] and [Person #2] to join me. We could work on [increasing/decreasing] the [yield/downtime/defects/errors/costs/time] on [specific product or process], but the course will also help us identify a good project to work on that aligns with our current roles and responsibilities.

The program runs 12 weeks. Each week we have to complete 4-6 hours of online training plus attend a 2-hour coaching session to review the training material and get questions answered about our project. We will also need to spend time on our project, so they estimate at least one full day per week for time commitment.

At the end of the program, we will be nearly done with the project, with a few more weeks to wrap up the improvements and quantify the success.

The Green Belt training will cover numerous improvement tools and content:

  • General Improvement Tools: Lean and Six Sigma Overview, Deployment Strategy and Belt Roles, Voice of the Customer (VOC), Data Collection and Concepts, Process Mapping, Behavior Change and Project Documentation and Certification
  • Six Sigma Tools: Project Charter, Cause and Effect (Prioritization) Matrix, Basic Statistics, Intro to Minitab (or SigmaXL or JMP), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), Capability Analysis (Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Intro to Hypothesis Testing, 2 Proportions and T Tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Correlation and Multiple Regression, Design of Experiments (DOE) and Control Plans
  • Lean Tools: 8 Types of Waste, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Theory of Constraints (TOC), Mistake Proofing (Poka Yoke), Continuous Flow Methods, Setup Reduction (SMED), Standard Work, 5S Workplace Organization, Visual Controls, Pull and Kanban, Daily Management System and Kaizen Events

Course Fee: $4,995 (for up to 3 project team members)

Expected Project Savings: $10,000-25,000

Return on Investment: Less than 6 months

Dates: {Jan-Apr / Mar-June / May-Aug / July-Oct / Sept-Dec YYYY]

This certification aligns with our goals for [operational excellence/continuous improvement], employee engagement and development, and will help with our annual budget and scorecard goals.

I am excited about this potential opportunity to improve my problem solving skills and show how our work drives tangible business results to the [company/organization].

Thank you for considering my request. I’m happy to discuss further or provide more information.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
